The Town of Huntington is one of the oldest settlements on Long Island, with a history dating back to 1653. The town was originally inhabited by Native Americans, but European explorers arrived in the early 17th century and brought disease that killed many of these tribes. The town expanded rapidly after the signing of the Eastern Purchase in 1691, and now covers more than ten square miles.

The Town of Huntington recently bought the Peter Crippen House, which is closely related to Huntington’s African American history. This house was unoccupied for twenty years and had declined significantly. In late 2019, the Town of Huntington purchased the property and turned it into a parking lot for its sewer plant. The town paid someone to analyze the structure’s condition and is currently deciding whether to keep it or redevelop it.
